Unwanted Classes
Looking for spanish classes online I began to wonder, why do I need a foreign language class to graduate? I took 2 years of spanish in high school and all I remember is me llamo Brandon, that's it. College is supposed to be a place where you learn the skills that will help you in your future career. Foreign languages are crucial to society but I never plan on being in an environment where I will have to know another language. I live in America where everyone speaks english or at least should. No one in college remembers anything about the language they study except how to say their name and ask where the bathroom is. Why do universities keep trying to stick unwanted, unneccasary classes that students are not interested in down our throats. Why can't universities listen to their students and give them what they want instead of charging them $40,000 to learn how to say el cuarto de baño. College is supposed to be about the students so why not listen to us.

Brandon I totally agree with you!!!!! I took 4 years of spanish (with senior year being an ADVANCED course of spanish) and I STILL had to take 2 quarters of spanish here at ONU. I was stunned. That was 2 classes winter and spring quarter I could be taking classes that count towards my MAJOR. I think that is just one reason why a lot of us don't graduate in four years! haha
This is a tough topic. Me, being a spanish minor who loves it, can definitely see the benefits of required foreign language classes. It broadens people's boundaries, stimulates their brains, and makes America not look as ignorant of other cultures as we are. Then again, I don't see how two piddley classes of spanish are going to help anyone who doesn't care to learn it in the first place (the majority of students). I guess that's what liberal arts is all about...and we're the ones who signed up for it, so we're stuck.
Big B!
Come on now buddy! I am sure you wrote that in the heat of the moment, and trust me I have been there as well! But as I sit here next to my GERMAN exchange student I am going to have to argue that there are at least some perks that can come with knowing another language. It is amazing to me the bond people can form coming from two totally different cultures!
Katrin and I began our relationship as exchange partners, and today I talk about her as if she lives down the street and I have known her my whole life!
Keep your chin up Brandon! You never know when a little bit of Yo quiero Taco Bell might come in handy!
